I’ve stayed in two types of staterooms on board the Disney Magic – Deluxe Inside and Family Concierge Stateroom with Verandah. We booked the inside stateroom when we booked a cruise somewhat last minute. We chose the cheapest room possible and ended up getting an upgrade prior to sail. The other stateroom categories are pretty much what they sound like, except Disney uses the word ‘verandah’ whereas most other cruise lines use the word balcony. An Oceanview stateroom will have portholes to look out of, and an inside stateroom will have no windows.
With the optional DisneyBand+, you can access your room, make purchases, and get magical surprises on this hands-free, wearable device. You might see Cinderella or Belle waving from the balcony overlooking the atrium or spot Pluto clowning around in the elevator, which seems to be a favorite spot. Or, you might get lucky and encounter a character as they’re moving from one spot to the next. I once happened upon Captain Hook traveling down a corridor on Deck 5. A schedule of movie times will are posted on the marquee outside the theater, and they’ll also be listed in the Disney Navigator App. Dress casual attire with a polished look is permitted (such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts and blouses, and lifestyle shoes).
How Big is the Disney Magic?
Even with its updates, the Disney Magic cruise ship retains a sense of tradition. Like its fleetmates, the vessel sports a nostalgic ocean liner appearance with a navy-blue hull and red funnels (customized with Mickeys, of course). Its Art Deco design is also complemented by nautical decor, and the Disney staple of "hidden Mickeys" stealthily placed in everything from wallpaper to light fixtures keep the magic alive for those who find them.

It can be easily removed, but you can also swim and shower with it if you’d like. While MagicBands have been around for a while, the DisneyBand+ (the Disney Cruise Line version of the Magicband) is relatively new. It’s currently available on sailings on the Disney Magic, the Disney Wish, the Disney Dream, and the Disney Fantasy. If you’ve been to the Disney parks in the United States, you may already be familiar with the concept of the MagicBand. Now, the convenience of the MagicBand has come to the Disney Cruise Line.
You can get the Disney Cruise Line limited bands by purchasing this way. On some of the ships, you’ll also need your Key to the World card inserted in the slot to operate the lights in your stateroom. The kid’s pool, the Huey, Dewey and Louie Pool, is two feet deep, and the family pool, Goofy’s Pool, is about four feet deep. The nursery is not included in the cost of your cruise, and reservations are required.
As the first-ever ship for Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Magic broke all kinds of long-standing norms for the cruise industry – introducing fireworks at sea, rotational dining, and many more innovations. These include drip coffee, juice, soda from soda machines, tap water, milk, tea and lemonade. The exceptions are alcoholic drinks, canned sodas from bars, bottled water and smoothies, which are purchased individually and charged to your folio. After a hard workout or time in the steam room, nothing is more refreshing than a fresh juice or smoothie.
There's no fee and no reservations required to come and play in these clubs. However, you will need to get a Magic Band from the kids club that is used to track the kiddos while they are in the clubs. If you return it on the last night of the cruise, you won't be charged for its use. The only difference between a category 4 stateroom and a category 5 is about 30 square feet at the end of the cabin, just before the verandah. In this extra space is a twin murphy bed that pulls down from the wall. For that matter, the only major difference between category 4 verandah staterooms and some of the category 5 rooms is about 30 square feet at the end of the cabin towards the verandah.

Our turn in Animator's Palate happened on the final night of our cruise, so the entire wait staff came out for a round of well-deserved applause with Mickey, and it was honestly pretty emotional. The one on Disney Magic starts in black and white, but the room and the wait staff gain colorful adornments throughout the course of the meal. A special guest makes an appearance during the grand finale, which is when things really transform into full color, accompanied with exciting music and special effects. Otherwise, it's just a large restaurant that gives off major art deco vibes. If you need to miss a restaurant in favor of a meal at Palo or relaxing in your room, I'd pick this one as it's the most generic of the three. For example, some elements of the ship are just 5 years old because they were added or revamped during Magic's last dry dock, when the cruise line took the opportunity to make some upgrades.

It only took a few minutes but it was annoying to have to go through this extra step after purchasing the bands. A limited selection of DisneyBand+ is available for purchase onboard the Disney Cruise Line ships. During my sailing, there were only a couple of styles, and the ones we had ordered in advance were not available. So, if you have a specific style you want, you should order them in advance.
One of the best things about a cruise is the food, especially if you're sailing on Disney Cruise Line. But, if there’s a style you love, or will use the bands for an upcoming Disneyland or Walt Disney World vacation, then you may find the DisneyBand+ to be a worthwhile purchase for your upcoming sailing. While it does offer almost all of the features of the original Key to the World card, it cannot be used to leave or return to the ship at foreign cruise ports of call. You will still need to scan your Key to the World card when leaving and returning to the ship. The shows typically run about 50 minutes to give guests time to get to dinner and other activities. Tangled the Musical is an abbreviated version of animated film and the show’s designers have done a fantastic job of telling the full story in the time allotted without making the guests feel cheated.
Even these fancier nights lean more toward the casual side, with many women dressed in summer or maxi-dresses as opposed to long, formal ones. Swimwear and tank tops are not allowed in the restaurants at dinner, but shorts and jeans are permitted. Beyond its intimate feel, a cruise on Disney Magic is all about attention to detail. While prices are often at a premium and upsells abound, you'll likely find it's money well spent if Disney is part of your family's DNA.
